Puppet Rapist

Browsing through YouTube yet again, I came across a promoted video titled “Puppet Rapist”. Thinking “WTF?!” in my head, I clicked on it and ended up spending almost half an hour watching all five episodes.

Brought to you by the creative folks at Waverly Films sometime in June this year, it first comes off as some cheesy cop drama show (condensed into five-ish-minute episodes) that you watch, laugh, then forget about the moment you click on another YouTube clip (which, knowing myself, inevitably leads to some crazy CS or driving videos). However, I soon found myself realizing that this is a pretty damn good mini series!

Okay, so the idea of rape may be offensive to many, and rightfully so. In fact, Puppet Rapist doesn’t condone rape at all, and if you begin to understand the story you find that it doesn’t humourize (that’s not a word, is it…hmm) it much, either. As I watched it the second time, I began to truly grasp the depth of this online series. The well-written story is full of twists and turns and injected with humour (hey, it involves puppets) at exactly the right moments, even elements of foreshadowing and irony. And just for (entertaining) shock effect, light doses of profanity and random scenes of extreme gore.

The acting is surprisingly gold for such a minor series, and lead character Jake Schreier plays a very-convincing convicted rapist tempted by his “dark, puppet ways”.

When these guys finally make it big, let it be known that I endorsed them from the moment I watched their clips. Links below.
