Rainbow Dots

22Sep07

The other night, I was craving some junk food (Freshman 15, here I come!), so I had a chunk of a small cake that I bought yesterday. I was halfway through enjoying my chocolate cake with rainbow dots when I suddenly thought to myself, “Wow, I wonder what it must be like to work in a factory that manufactures those bittersweet tiny spheres coloured with Yellow #5, Blue #7, Red #2, Green #1, Orange #3, Pink #4, and Purple #6!”

Seriously…how freakin’ awesome would that be?! You’d probably have to wear a one-piece suit so that the dots don’t fly everywhere into your clothes, and because of the flying dots, the ground would probably be a giant sticky rainbow, hippie-style. Which is why you’d need rubber boots, as well.

And just imagine…big vats everywhere in the factory, trillions and trillions of dots in each of them after being shot out from a pipe right over the vat (which leads to the machine that bakes and colours the dots). You could jump in and take a fantastic swim, if it weren’t for the fact that the dots would get into your ears and nose and yes, probably eyes, and suffocate you to death. I wonder how many fatalities there have been at dot factories…

Now think about when all the different colours get mixed; once all those vats are filled to the brim, they tip over and all the dots are poured into a gigantic vat below, which slowly mixes all the dots together, creating a multi-coloured dot utopia! And then bit by bit, those dots are deposited in plastic packages, where they’ll be shipped off to a bakery that will bake small chocolate cakes with rainbow dots, which I will then buy and eat and enjoy, and contemplate the world behind those minute balls of colour and stuff.

Small things amuse small minds.

Rainbow Dots!

  1. … i have no words for this…
only that i was thinking the EXACT same thing yesterday! (except I imagined those oompa loompas from willy wonka’s chocolate factory making them instead!) In addition to those sprinkly dots, have you ever wondered about the little silver balls that are put on cakes? specifically wedding cakes? i dunno… i just can’t get over how rolly they are and difficult they must be to handle! anyway, im late for class. good luck with future posts!

  2. Wow!

Haha, I’ve never thought much about wedding cakes, but now that you’ve mentioned…I’m gonna be contemplating the meaning of silver balls on wedding cakes for the rest of the day. :P
